| Project to Analyse the Cocoa Genome |

Mars Inc have funded a $10 million genetics research project to analyse the genome of the cacao plant, to improve crop yields by learning about its ideal growing conditions, and resistance to crop diseases and drought. A team from the US Department of Agriculture will be working in conjunction with Mars and IBM's Computational Biology research group , and the findings of the research will be made public through the Public Intellectual Property Resource for Agriculture (PIPRA). For more information on cocoa genome research project, see Mars, Inc and Discovery News .

Project to Analyse the Cocoa Genome
Jul 17 2008 20:50:08 ** This thread discusses the Content article: Project to Analyse the Cocoa Genome **
Should get a lot of sequencing done for $10 million. With the newer 454 type machines I'd have thought they could get the sequence pretty early on and spend the remaining 8m on functional analysis. I wonder what they're planning to do with the information.....If it were me I'd have a look to see if the metabolic pathway could be reconstituted in something a bacterium like E. coli. Could make the raw ingredients in a big fermentor rather than wait for plants to produce it. |
